So TRA launched its new IDRAS system on February 9, 2026. I know, I know—another government digital system. We’ve all been there before, right?
But I was curious. So instead of just reading the press releases or complaining, I actually spent a whole week diving in. Created an account, clicked through every menu, watched their training videos, and tested features myself.
And honestly? I’m kind of impressed.
Let me break down what I found.
The Dashboard Actually Makes Sense
Here’s the first thing that hit me: when you log in with your TIN, you land on a dashboard that doesn’t feel like it was designed in 2005.
It’s clean. It’s organized. You can actually find things.
Your profile sits right there—registration details, any accountants or representatives you’ve linked, your compliance status. Everything you need is visible without digging through five different menus.
There’s an inbox for TRA notices (no more “we sent you a letter that got lost somewhere”). You get automated prompts when you’re filing returns that catch basic errors before you submit. And you can track everything in real time—payments, transaction history, assessments, and more.
I tested this on my phone too. Fully mobile-responsive. No separate app needed. Just pull it up on your browser and go.
Compare that to the old system where you’d be hunting for forms, not sure if your payment went through, waiting weeks for confirmation… this is way better.
Free VFD Receipts? Yes, Really
Okay, this is the part that got me genuinely excited.
You know how getting fiscal devices has always been a headache? Either you’re buying those clunky EFD machines that break all the time, or you’re paying monthly subscriptions to third-party VFD providers. It’s been a pain point for small businesses forever.
IDRAS has a built-in Online POS Application that lets you generate Virtual Fiscal Device receipts. For free.
No hardware. No subscriptions. Just log into IDRAS, go to the Online POS module, enter your transaction details, and boom—you get an official TRA-signed fiscal receipt with a QR code.
You can send it to your customer via SMS or email right away. The system automatically creates your daily Z-reports and summaries too, so tracking sales is easier.
For market vendors, freelancers, small traders, and anyone running a small business—this changes things. You’re compliant without buying expensive equipment or dealing with maintenance headaches.
If you’re running higher volumes, there’s even an API you can integrate with. But the basic tool in the portal works perfectly fine for most people.
I’ve heard complaints about VFD costs and reliability for years. This feature alone should help a lot of businesses get compliant without stressing about it.
The Navigation is Modern (Finally)
IDRAS has 14 key modules, all live at launch and more may be coming later.
The whole thing is menu-driven, but it’s not overwhelming. Everything’s clearly labeled. You don’t feel lost.
It’s built to be self-service, which is huge. Less back-and-forth with TRA offices. Less waiting. More control on your end.
And again—mobile works perfectly. Manage your taxes from your phone while you’re at a meeting or sitting in traffic. That convenience matters.
What About Privacy?
Look, anytime we’re talking about digital government systems, privacy is a valid concern. I get it.
TRA says everything is secure and automated. They’ve been running training sessions, putting out videos, answering questions. That’s a good sign—at least they’re trying to support the transition.
But yeah, keep an eye on how your data is handled. Ask questions if you need to. That’s fair.
My Honest Take
From everything I tested and researched, IDRAS feels like a real step forward.
It doesn’t change tax laws or rates—taxes are still taxes. But it makes dealing with them way less painful. The UX is solid, the free VFD receipts solve a massive problem, and the whole system is designed for transparency and ease of use.
Is it perfect? Probably not. There’ll be bugs. There’ll be a learning curve for some people. But compared to what we’ve been dealing with? This is progress.
If you haven’t checked it out yet, I’d recommend logging into the official TRA portal (via tra.go.tz), verifying your details, resetting your password if you need to, and just exploring.
The improvements are real. And the free VFD receipts alone make it worth your time.
Let’s make 2026 the year we actually get our tax game together. If you hit any issues, TRA’s support channels are there to help.
Bottom line: IDRAS isn’t just another government portal. It’s actually usable. And that’s worth talking about.
